The second grade teachers will take two (2) lucky second graders from each class out to the Silver Diner for an early dinner (meet at the school at 4:30) and ice cream, on a mutually agreed upon day in June. Lyon Park neighbor, Gary Putnam will teach a knife skills class to 5 on Sunday, April 3rd at 3:00pm at the home of Stacy Snyder showing how to acquire and use the basic skills to get the most from your kitchen knives. This will be a hands-on session lasting approximately two hours and will cover most everything from selecting a knife to care and feeding in addition to the skills portion. We will review varied knives used for different purposes. Please bring your favorite kitchen knife (usually referred to as a chef's knife) and a cutting board. Please safely cover the edge of the knife. We will examine all the knives and sharpen those necessary. We will practice cutting, chopping, dicing, folding, spindling and mutilating vegetables. This session assumes no prior knowledge and will be user-friendly. A few extra knives and cutting boards will be available including some specialized and unusual ones to try out.
